We have heard the quote “Beware of your Self Talk with the Universe”. In the context of health and wellness, “Beware of the Self talk with your Body” may probably be quite appropriate.

In the book “You Can Heal Your Life”, Louise Hay explains how our mind and body are intricately connected and propounds that most illnesses have their roots in the emotional and spiritual aspects of the mind – its thought patterns and beliefs. While modern medicine is focussed mostly on the physical manifestation of dis-eases (dis-ease meaning not at ease) and treatment, Louise Hay’s approach is to identify and resolve the unhealthy thought patterns and beliefs which are the root cause of most of the dis-eases. This is healing at the source level of the problem and not just at a symptomatic, physically manifested level. However, the intention is not to underplay modern medicine’s necessity and effectiveness. Medical intervention is most certainly very important, especially in critical illness, trauma, accidents etc.. But when dealing with chronic or recurring health issues, in addition to conventional medical treatment, it may be worthwhile to look at the problem holistically as well – whether there are any stressors, limiting beliefs or thought patterns that could be preventing us from healing and enjoying good health.

There is enough scientific research to back the fact that when we experience intense emotions, there are corresponding changes in the physiological functions of our body. Positive emotions bring positive changes in the body with hormones like endorphins, dopamine and serotonin being released. These “happy hormones” promote the sense of well being and happiness including promoting cellular healing. Negative emotions like anger, fear, resentment, guilt, etc have the reverse effect.  Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline are released into the blood stream triggering a fight or flight response. In addition to the more obvious physiological responses like increased heart beat, sweating or gooseflesh and trembling limbs, it could also induce changes in the pH levels of blood. A prolonged or constant state of stress is the beginning of onset of dis-eases.

In today’s fast paced, highly competitive world, we are almost always in a state of stress. And so is every single cell in our bodies. It is time we realized that mental well being is equally important for our physical health and wellness. The mind and body are not isolated factors – they are integrally interconnected.

One chronic condition I have had is stomatitis, commonly called as mouth ulcers. When in school, whenever I would visit my doctor with this condition his first question used to be “Do you have exams? Are you stressed?” No, exams have never stressed me out 🙂 ..  I eventually identified the type of stress causing these ulcers – it was stress specifically as a result of suppressed anger and frustration with people or situations. Now whenever the ulcers surface, I know it is time to do an emotional cleansing. I sift thought my predominant thoughts and try to figure out the source of the anger or frustration. I then mentally revisit the situation and try to work through it – through empathy, compassion, love and/or forgiveness. Not surprisingly, the more severe the attack, no prizes for guessing at whom the anger is directed, it is at myself. There are several instances where the ulcers have disappeared overnight after inner work. And there are those which persist for a week or more which is a sign that deep rooted issues have resurfaced.

Affirmations are a self help tool to help work on the “emotional aspect” of the dis-eases. This is not a substitute or replacement for medical attention or treatment. While medicines work on the physiology of the body and help in healing, affirmations  work at a subconscious level to help hasten the healing process and possibly prevent recurrence of the dis-ease. Affirmations can be a wonderful supplement to medical treatment to promote good health and wellness.

Given below are a list of powerful affirmations to infuse your mind with positive emotions and promote good health and healing. For help with affirmations for specific medical conditions or dis-eases, please send me the details through email.
